Alicia Salvacion is a character played by Yasmien Kurdi that first appeared in the 2020 Toho disaster film, #JusticeForLove: End of the World, and serves as the main protagonist in the 2021 series Justice for Love Presents: The Obsession.
Name[]
"Alicia" is a feminine given name, which comes from the Germanic name Adalheidis (Adelaide), meaning "noble natured" (noble of kind).
In-universe, Romina probably named Alicia after her hometown in Bohol, which is also named Alicia.
History[]
#JusticeForLove: End of the World[]
Escaping her home country to seek a new life on her own[note 2], Alicia's perfect life is shattered once again following the death of her husband and baby in a streetcar accident in San Francisco. With everything she had was again lost, Alicia loses hope and begins to suffer from depression. After a few days, Alicia attempts to commit suicide for the third time[note 3], this time by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Mylene accidentally interferes and giving Alicia another chance to live as she and Mylene become friends, after promising to help Alicia recover from her depression.
Sometime later, Alicia was kidnapped by her own brother, Ethan, who is seeking revenge on Alicia and has become obsessed in killing her. Luckily, Lori was able to locate and rescue her after Mylene immediately noticed her sudden disappearance. In the next few days, Alicia begins to experience frequent headache and dizziness, and at one point even losing consciousness. Lori decides to bring Alicia to a hospital, in which she is diagnosed with internal bleeding in her brain, and has only seven months left to live.
Alicia then visits Ethan in a psychiatric hospital, and blames him for permanently ruining her life due to his intense hatred and his obsession in seeking revenge. Afterwards, she considers about returning to Manila to reunite with her mother, Romina, and spend her last few months there. However, following Olivia's death which resulted in Mylene being framed for murder, Alicia is forced to stay in San Francisco to help Mylene clear her name, with additional help from Stephanie, Cristina, and Lori.
Two months later, Mylene finally finds out Alicia's internal bleeding in her brain, while her remaining life is now reduced. This forces Alicia, along with Romina's sister Corazon, to finally return to Manila, but finds out that Romina had already passed away only a few hours before their arrival. Alicia realizes that she was too late, and immediately regrets her decision to help Mylene in San Francisco. Mylene apologizes to Alicia for what happened, but she initially refuses to accept Mylene's apology.
As Alicia's health condition continues to worsen, and the end of mankind now inevitable, Alicia accepts her ultimate fate, and decides to visit some of her former relatives for the last time, including her ex-husband Nathan, and her supportive best friend Eileen. In her final moments, just before Clara's impact, Alicia finally forgives Mylene for blaming her, before eventually wishes for a second chance to start anew, by letting the asteroid impact Earth and wipe out human civilization, at the same time being able to reunite with her loved ones in the afterlife.
Although not shown, Alicia is implied to be killed by the global firestorm along with the rest of mankind, as the entire surface of the Earth has been rendered uninhabitable.
Justice for Love Presents: The Obsession[]
Two years before the end of mankind[note 4], Alicia wakes up in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands after a two-year coma. She is asked where she came from and how she ended up in Saipan, by Richard and his wife Lolita. Alicia begins to recall the events which led her to this point.
Chapter 1 (1997)[]
In 1997, while at a park, the Salvacion family is celebrating Ethan's 7th birthday, when Alicia accidentally loses her younger brother. Alicia's mother, Romina, blames her for the incident, resulting in Alicia getting emotionally abused in the next few days. One night, after picking up Alicia from school, Romina gets involved in a traffic accident due to her drunk driving, risking Alicia's life at a young age. Luckily, she only suffered from minor injuries, while Romina apologizes to Alicia for what she did to her in the past few days.
Chapter 2 (2012 - 2015)[]
Fifteen years later, after graduating college and is now working as a hotel receptionist, Alicia begins to notice unusual events happening to her since Ethan's return. One night, after returning home from work, Alicia finds her room now trashed. Alicia at first blames Romina, while Romina insists she never did it, resulting in Alicia apologizing to her mother the next day for accusing her.
Sometime later, Alicia meets Nathan, and falls in love with him. One day, Nathan asks Alicia out on a date, which she accepts. However, Alicia is lured into an abandoned warehouse, in which she is knocked out unconscious by an unknown assailant, and wakes up the next day, causing Alicia to miss her supposed date with Nathan yesterday.
3 months later, Alicia and Nathan are now engaged, and begins planning their wedding, when Alicia is hospitalized due to food poisoning. Alicia's father, Raymond, advices Alicia to be more careful after beginning to notice that someone is attempting to sabotage Alicia's life.
On their wedding day, Alicia founds out that her wedding dress is now ruined, and is immediately replaced at the last minute by Veronica, Nathan's mother, while the wedding continues as planned. Alicia and Nathan decide to celebrate their honeymoon at Boracay Island, but Alicia misses their flight after passing out from a drink mixed with sleeping pills.
Chapter 3 (2015 - 2016)[]
By 2015, Alicia suddenly finds Raymond now dead inside of their own home, while Romina is in Bohol visiting Alicia's grandparents. When the authorities arrive a few moments later, she is arrested and detained in a police station due to her fingerprints being found on the murder weapon used, and the lack of other witnesses. Because of this incident, Alicia lost her job as a receptionist, while Nathan decides to breakup with Alicia, as Veronica couldn't accept having a criminal as her daughter-in-law.
Romina also blames Alicia, for murdering her husband and Alicia's own father. Eileen, on the other hand, still believes that Alicia is innocent. For a whole year, Alicia spent her life inside of a jail cell. One day, Alicia also attempted to commit suicide, after finding out that Nathan is now engaged to Lynette. On August 24, 2016, Alicia is brought to the Manila City Hall for her court trial, in which she is proven guilty for the murder of her own father, while Alicia insists that she's innocent.
Romina, Nathan, and her other relatives, are all ashamed at Alicia, believing she actually murdered Raymond. Alicia is transferred to prison, where she is sentenced for life. Desperate to clear her name, she manages to escape during a prison riot and immediately boards a ferry bound for Cebu City, in an attempt to hide at her grandparents' place in Alicia, Bohol. While the ferry is in the San Bernardino Strait, Alicia is caught and surrounded by the authorities, and the ferry is ordered to stop at the nearby port in Allen, Northern Samar.
With nowhere to go, Alicia decides to commit suicide for the second time by jumping off the ferry and into the water. At the same time, Typhoon Nock-ten approaches the Bicol Region, forcing the rescue operation to be suspended, while the ferry later sank after it encountered large waves and strong winds caused by the typhoon. Because of the incident, while her remains was never found by the authorities, Alicia is now presumed dead.
Chapter 4 (2016 - 2018)[]
Alicia is found in the Northern Mariana Islands, by an American soldier, Richard, and his Filipino wife, Lolita, but is in a coma. After two years has passed with no signs of improvement on her condition, Richard finally agrees to turn off Alicia's life support, the only machine keeping her alive, but Lolita insists to give her a few more months. However, on October 24, 2018, Typhoon Yutu made landfall in Tinian at peak intensity, disabling Alicia's life support in the process, resulting in Alicia being presumed dead for the second time.
Chapter 5 (2018 - 2020)[]
Following the events of Typhoon Yutu, Alicia finally regains consciousness, ending the flashback sequence. Richard and Lolita help Alicia recover in the next few weeks, while Richard offers Alicia a job at his relative's workplace in Honolulu. After spending time with the couple, Alicia leaves Saipan and starts a new life on her own in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she meets Catherine, the manager of the Aloha Hotel, and begins working again as a receptionist. There, she eventually meets Adrian, her second love interest.
After a few months, Adrian suggests Alicia to come with him to San Francisco to raise a family there, which she accepts. Upon arriving in San Francisco, Alicia and Adrian eventually get married while Alicia reveals that she's pregnant. By 2020, she gave birth to their first and only baby.
The Final Moments[]
As Clara impacts central France[note 4], Alicia and Corazon spend their remaining 12 hours of their life in Manila, where Alicia begins to realize that the random individuals she met, actually cared for her more than her own relatives, and decides to thank them for helping her recover and giving her another chance to live. Veronica then suddenly arrives to apologize to Alicia, for despising her in the past, but Alicia refuses to accept her apology, believing it is too late for forgiveness. Later on, as the firestorm approaches, both Alicia and Corazon embrace their deaths, immediately turning them into ash, while the rest of Manila is obliterated by the global firestorm, later engulfing the entire Earth.
Trivia[]
- As shown in the prequel series, Alicia's story contains many similarities to Angela Ferrer's in the 2014 series Rhodora X, but is minimized in the film due to being more similar to Melancholia.
- She is the only protagonist to appear in both entries of the Justice for Love duology.
- Earlier drafts portrayed her more antagonistic, but this was changed after Toho found it "inappropriate" to the story.
- The scene where she attempts to commit suicide at the Golden Gate Bridge is framed very similarly to a scene in the 2018 series Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka, also starring Yasmien Kurdi.
- In the theatrical version, Alicia could be seen reuniting with her family in the afterlife, during the film's final scene. This signifies that Alicia's wish of giving her a second chance to start anew was granted.
- Toho removed this scene in the international version, replacing it with shots of a ruined San Francisco. Toho wanted the film's final scene to be identical to The Last War.
- Yasmien Kurdi would later appear as Rebecca de Guzman in the Reiwa series, starting in the 2022 film Godzilla: The Kaiju Invasion.
- This is not the first time Yasmien Kurdi portrayed a character named Alicia. She also portrays a character of the same name in the 2019 series Beautiful Justice, which, coincidentally, have the exact same theme as the Justice for Love duology.
- The actress that portrayed young Alicia was not credited in the series' credits.
- Alicia's apartment in San Francisco is located in either North Beach or Telegraph Hill. This location was intentionally chosen due to the close proximity of San Francisco's two prominent landmarks, Coit Tower and Transamerica Pyramid.
- Both landmarks are visible in the background when Ethan kidnaps Alicia. The Transamerica Pyramid also appears in establishing shots of Alicia's apartment, again due to its close proximity.
- In an early draft of the film, Alicia was originally named Sylvia.
- In the American reboot of the film, Justice for the End of the World, both Isabelle Abiera and Yasmien Kurdi briefly appear in one scene in a cameo appearance. While their names are not fully mentioned, they are credited as “Salvacion” and “Concepcion”, referencing their characters in the original entries.
- The character has mild references to actress Alicia Silverstone; both share the same given name, while both their surnames also starts with the same letter, and both has affiliation with San Francisco, either hometown or place of residence.
