Gamera vs. Imushantu is a 2017 film directed and co-created by Max Carroll and Josiah Wallace. The film follows Gamera as he battles a mystical monster threatening to destroy Japan by releasing a natural toxin that is poisonous to humans. The film serves as a direct sequel to Gamera (1965) and ignores all continuity to the rest of the Showa Gamera series. It is the first of the Gamera Kyushu Trilogy.
Plot[]
Japan is busy recovering after Gamera's rampage across the countryside and throughout Tokyo hours earlier. In a remote cave near Mt. Mihara, a priest is looking for an ancient amulet that could possibly cure all wounds to those injured in Gamera's attack, but instead finds an ancient statue of a giant monster with a scripture attached to it. The scripture warns not to say the words "Hou Otayh Imyee Hayboo" or else a wrathful monster of ancient legend known as Imushantu will awaken and destroy the country. The priest says the words foolishly and the statue comes alive, breaking it's rocky covering and revealing it to be a golden monster resembling a cross between a human and a crow. Imushantu kills the priest and leaves the cave, going on a destructive rampage across the country.
Meawhile, in space, the rocket that Gamera was imprisoned in at the end of the first film is shattered by a runaway meteorite, releasing the turtle monster. Gamera then makes his way back to Earth and destroys a village near Hokkaido before moving on.
Meanwhile, Imushantu demolishes a dam and destroys Nagoya, impervious to any or all Japanese forces that try and stop the beast. The government learns that the goal of Imushantu is to survive by releasing a natural toxin onto predators and prey. The prey, in this case, being humans.
Afterwards, the government tries to figure out how to get rid of both Gamera and Imushantu. After the Prime Minister denies permission to use nuclear weapons, what woke Gamera from his rest before, it is eventually decided to lure the monsters to each other in the hopes that they will destroy each other. The government then decides to lure the monsters to Osaka using an artificial forest fire to lure Gamera and a large piece of rock incrested gold to lure Imushantu.
The government is successful and they lure the beasts to Osaka, where they duel. Imushantu initially has the upper hand against Gamera, due to his flight and reflexes and it's natural toxin, but Gamera soon catches up to his rival with his fire breath and manages to melt some of his enemy's armored flesh. Imushantu then attempts to flee, but is shot down when the J.S.D.F. pours water on a very sensitive spot on it's back, causing it to fall into the water and drown.
Gamera then roars in victory and leaves, with puzzled onlookers unsure if they had just made a friend or an enemy.
