Godzilla: The Great Dynasty (Japanese: ゴジラ 偉大な王朝, Hepburn: Gojira Idaina ōchō) is a 2027 Japanese kaiju action film co-written and directed by Shinsuke Sato. Produced by Toho Studios and Cine Bazar, it is the 41st film in the Godzilla franchise, Toho's 35th Godzilla film, and the seventh film in the franchise's Reiwa era. It stars Kento Yamazaki, Ryo Yoshizawa, Kanna Hashimoto, Anne Watanabe, Masami Nagasawa, Takao Osawa and Koji Yakusho. In the film, the Azuchi–Momoyama Japanese people, recently defeated by Joseon in the Battle of Noryang, summon their monster gods, Ghidorah and Bagan, to help them defeat their neighboring countries. This plan fails once their gods turn on them, and they summon their final monster god, Godzilla, to help defeat these rogue monsters.
Despite production for Godzilla Plus Two commencing a few months after Godzilla Minus One became a success in America, Toho decided to eye at another reboot for the series. The studio hired Kingdom trilogy director Shinsuke Sato, due to his experience in directing Japanese blockbusters. His story focused on ancient Japan, centering around how Godzilla was worshipped as a deity. Sato, Tsutomu Kuroiwa and Yasuhisa Hara wrote the script in the span of five months, Yasushi Nirasawa designed the titular character, and Shinji Nishikawa designed Ghidorah and Bagan. Principal photography went from March to July 2025.
Godzilla: The Great Dynasty released on July 23, 2027 in Japan, and September 10, 2027 in the United States. The film grossed $103.5 million against a budget of $15-18.5 million. It received positive reviews, particularly for its story, action sequences and visual effects, with some critics abroad comparing it to Shōgun, though in Japan, the film was criticized for "anti-Japanese sentiment." The film was nominated for Best International Feature Film and Best Sound at the 100th Academy Awards.
