Godzilla and the Second Coming is a 2029 Christian epic kaiju film directed and co-produced by Mel Gibson, and written by Gibson, Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields. Produced by Gibson's Icon Productions and Legendary Pictures, it is the 38th film of the Godzilla franchise, and the seventh Godzilla film to be completely produced by an American film studio. The film stars Matthew McConaughey as Jesus Christ / God, with Mark Wahlberg, Jim Caviezel, Nicole Kidman, Cailey Fleming, Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe and Christian Bale. It is loosely based on the Book of Revelation from the Bible; in the film, Jesus Christ returns on the back of the giant monster Godzilla to judge the Earth and goes on a mission to throw the Satanic Dragon into the abyss. In the meantime, a family that was unrightfully taken by Satan goes through hellish suffering, praying to Jesus for their salvation from the Devil.

With Mel Gibson having made a comeback, and the Godzilla franchise growing steadily strong with the announcement of two Godzilla films from Legendary and Toho, Gibson decided to tackle his first directorial effort on the character. He went to Legendary to pitch a Godzilla film that involved the Book of Revelation, and how Godzilla could be the "harbinger of the end times." He hired Godzilla: King of the Monsters screenwriters Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields to help him write the script. Gibson and Dougherty, who were both Catholic, made sure the film stayed respectful to Christianity and the Bible, whilst also giving the film value in it being a Godzilla film. Principal photography started in July 2026 and wrapped in November. With a budget of $230-250 million, this was the most expensive of the Godzilla franchise, as well as Gibson's most expensive film.

Godzilla and the Second Coming was released worldwide on April 6, 2029, to mixed reviews; critics praised McConaughey and Bale's performances, the visual effects, action, the musical score and Gibson's direction, but criticized its screenplay, side characters and over-glorification of Christianity. Christian commentators noted its deviations from the Book of Revelation. The film grossed $671.4 million, becoming the highest-grossing Godzilla film to date, as well as Gibson's highest-grossing film. The film received four Academy Award nominations, for Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.

Plot[]

At the throne of heaven, Jesus sits as he looks upon in happiness and justice for the people of Earth. Archangel Michael tells him that it is time, though Christ had already knew what was going to happen. He generated a giant beast in which he titled "Godzilla." He watches over the planet, as he prepares for justice and tribulation.

On Earth, Christian missionary activities grew in scope and scale, which was something Dr. Miguel Johns was thankful for, citing Matthew 28 as a way of encouraging his students at the university he is teaching in. In his lectures, he states that, when the Great Commission ends, Jesus will come with all his might and strength to judge the living and the dead. When one of his students asked why the Great Commission is taking so long to complete, Miguel tells him that the reason is how sin is preventing them from fulfilling God's promise, and that he will return once he deems necessary. When he picks up his daughter Casey from high school, she asks more questions in regards to God. Miguel laughs and says that she has to prepare for church the day after tomorrow.

During dinnertime, Miguel, his wife Lindsay, and Casey all make their prayers and discussing what they did today, until a door bell rung at the front door. When Miguel went to answer, it was his older brother James with a hoodie covering his upper face. Miguel welcomes him in, and James rushed in. His eyes were blank white, and had said a cryptic message of "he is coming" before passing out. They rushed him to the hospital, where James went on to live. But he had to stay in the hospital throughout Saturday until he could be discharged the following morning. When Miguel asked James what was going on, James claimed that he had seen the vision of Jesus coming back to Earth in three days. Knowing how he had pure white eyes, he was quick to believe, but didn't have the guts to tell anyone about it. Casey had come into the hospital to see her uncle and embraced her.

In Sunday, the family attended their regular church mass. However, all of a sudden, and earthquake had struck the area and shook the congregation. They all got outside and saw the roads and houses crumble. The Johns family all panicked and ran down the streets and in an attempt to best avoid the ensuing chaos. The earthquake had suddenly stopped. It was measured at a 9.2 magnitude by the seismologists that had arrived hours later, one of the biggest in United States history, with buildings and houses toppled, except for the churches standing by, which included the cathedral in which the Johns's attended. As citizens of the town shook in awe and disbelief, Miguel suddenly got on top of his somewhat-damaged car and yelled at the nearby townsfolk, testifying that the end times were near and that Jesus was coming, and to tell others around the world about it. The people then fled the scene, shook by what had happened.

Later that evening, it showed that the townsfolk were salvaging their materials. This included Johns's house, which was destroyed by the earthquake, but some of their material needs, such food, water and batteries were left undamaged, which remained the same for all the other houses as well. Their Bibles were also clean, untouched by the dust and not even scraped by the dust. The Johns family stood in front of their destroyed house and started praying. As they were praying, a montage of news channels showed the sudden spike in volcanic and seismic activity across the world, signifying that it may be the end times. And as these signs were showing, an exponential growth in believers in Christ grew overnight. Jesus saw these people turning to him in relief, as he orders Michael and Archangel Raphael to come down to Earth and await the commands to send the armies of heaven down on the Earth.

In Hell, Satan wanted to plan his attack on the Earth. He had grown hungry for souls to be entrapped in Hell alongside him. He boasted and spoke of his glorious days to the demons around him about how he was God's leading musician in heaven. He asks his demons to join him in his battle against Christ, in which they all cheer him on and chant "Hail Satan!" He summons his signature dragon in Satanic Ghidorah, and finally unleashes The Beast, after he says the mark of the beast "666." Satan and The Beast lead charge as the armies of demons follow them to invade Earth.

Monday morning arises, and Miguel wants to give his daughter one last Bible lesson before the End comes. He opens up scripture to John 3, where he recites verse 16, which was Casey's favorite. He assures her that their family would be in peace with them under God, because he says that scripture from Jesus states that "whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life." When she asks if her friends would be heaven with her, Miguel assures her that they would have all turned to Christ and would beg for his love and mercy, so they will have a spot in heaven as well. Suddenly, lightning shocked across the Earth. And a comet-like structure came crashing down to Earth near the Jersey shore, where the Johns could see it from a distance. The giant titan emerged from the river, with his height almost reaching the clouds, as a shining beacon of light shun on his forehead. He roared and shot a giant ray of energy into the sky. The voice of God thundered across the entire planet, ordering them to get into the nearest "house of God." Instinctively, people began to run towards churches as Godzilla charged up his mouth for, presumably, an attack. The Johns got into their cathedral, and looked out the window. Godzilla shot his heat ray from his mouth onto the streets and skyscrapers of New York. He trampled over the cars and lamps that occupied the streets, and another devastating heat ray annihilated the city. A flash of light signified that he had teleported away. When the damage was done, no building was left standing, except the churches that kept numerous people safe.

This process of destruction and retribution spanned several more months of cities being annihilated. Despite God's clear instructions, some nations tried to fight back; when Jesus and Godzilla had arrived in Pyongyang, the North Korean military had sent their entire stockpile of military arsenal, and did not even damage the divine beings. Jesus commanded Godzilla to fight back, and annihilated the entire fleet. When it was all set and done, the world was set ablaze, but very few casualties occurred. Jesus's Great Tribulation had finally come to a stop. The fires died down in days.

When the family stepped out and other people, the smell of fresh grass had incapsulated them to the world that was healing under God. Jesus then made a decree that the people have been judged and judged righteously, and that a new revival of the Earth will be coming as the human population will finally be ascended to live in heaven. As the people cheered, a hostile rumble had been coming from underneath. The Johns panicked as the earth beneath them collapsed and engulfed in a massive abyss of a chasm. Jesus looked in anger and horror, as hundreds of millions of demons take people hostage, disintegrate people to hell using their weapons and destroying his new creation. He orders the angels to be sent down to finally counteract the armies of demons. A great war had begun for the earth.

When Miguel woke up, they see that he was the only one that made it out of the chasm somehow. But he knew his family was taken; his brother, his wife and daughter were all stuck in hell. He watches in horror, desperation and confusion as the battle around him wages on, seeing a continuous amount of people being taken, demons being atomized out of existence, all the while Jesus himself is slaughtering demons with his own sword. Miguel got in his knees and prayed for Jesus to hear his calling, that people down there need his help. Upon opening his eyes, he sees Jesus standing in front of him. He takes Miguel by the hand and then asks him to join his fight to liberate the people down there. Miguel takes his hand and joins Christ as the two jump into the sinkhole, with hundreds of soldiers by their end.

In the meantime, Casey is scared, locked away in a prison cell. She sees her uncle and mother being taken away to do treacherous labor by the demons, and she can't help but pray even harder to Jesus. She starts breaking down and when the demons approach her, they laugh and taunt at her suffering. Casey cries for Jesus, as her screams reverberated around Jesus as he dives towards the depths of hell. Miguel hears her cries and tells Christ that that was his daughter that he could hear. Jesus replies with how he hears the screams of millions taken unjustly by Satan, and that those people don't deserve retribution that he would've enacted had they not believed. Jesus promises that his daughter and the lives of millions will be safe under him.

Satan finally comes to the congregation that were wrongfully taken and declares himself the king above those in hell. As he boasts about how he has taken away from God, Jesus crashes and lands feet-first as Miguel facepalms himself to the ground. A rumbling of angels follows him, as he charges in and slaughters the demons. Miguel finds his family and asks Jesus to take them all up again, and Jesus makes a safe point for them and the millions of others that were taken. He lets Archangel Michael take over the fight, but right as Jesus lifts up to go to Earth, Satan comes in and kills Archangel Michael in front of Jesus with a stab from his sword. Jesus was shocked as he ascended to keep the enemies safe.

People were startled by how Satan just killed Michael, but Jesus stayed firm and strong, stating that since he died for his name and how his name will forever be enamored in heaven. The civilians raised a hurrah, before The Beast had emerged to take on Jesus. The people chanted "Hail king Jesus!" before Jesus and his Godzilla charged into battle against The Beast, which, while putting up a good fight, had lost and retreated back into the depths of hell. The people praised him and his victory, as Jesus waged on that he will be the one to take on Satan and The Beast. Christ jumped into the sinkhole once more to settle the score, as Miguel and his family looked at him in awe and style="background: #99FF99; color: black; vertical-align: middle; text-align: center; " class="yes table-yes2"|Wonder.

Down in hell, Satan sees the aftermath of the battle. Millions of dead angels and demons, and The Beast also being critically injured, made the Satan tremble in fear. Jesus had come to altercate with him one last time to finally settle his judgment. Satan sent Ghidorah and The Beast after Jesus's Godzilla, as the two dueled an eye-level sword match. The battle went back-and-forth multiple times, with each side striking multiple blows. It seemed as if Satan was going to win, which put him off-guard, so he began to taunt him that he wasn't the "all-powerful God." Jesus proclaims mid-battle that he is, but he is showing an example to the mortals that they can come back through his name.

A confused Satan continues to attack him, seemingly to gain the upper hand and finally lands a stabbing blow on Jesus. He maniacally laughs as The Beast and Ghidorah pin Godzilla onto the barren ground. Jesus gets his hands and feet cut off by Satan's sword, and he falls to the ground and disintegrates. Godzilla, appearing helpless and powerless to remove the two monsters off of him, comes face to face with the sword of Satan. Just as he is about to deliver the finishing blow, an echo of prayers come; from the Johns to the people across the entire world chant the phrase "All hail Jesus!" multiple times, Satan trembles in fear as Jesus reconstructs himself. He declares himself all-powerful but that he willingly died so that people can look forward to him, citing how he is "the Alpha and the Omega" but that he is also "the good shepherd."

The two continue their duel, as Godzilla resuscitates and fights the two beasts. Jesus now easily started to get the upper hand, with Godzilla even completely destroying The Beast with his heat ray. Jesus gives Satan some final words before he completely handicaps him and cuts his head off. And in the meantime, Godzilla finally dispatches Satanic Ghidorah from existence. Jesus took control of hell from Satan, and finally, as a last resort, he commands Godzilla to drill an endless abyss in hell. After doing so, he takes Satan's head and body and throws them down the hole, never to be seen again.

Miguel and his family await the results, to see if their prayers had been worth it. The people cheer, as Godzilla emerges from the hole and Jesus raises his arms in victory. He decrees a final covenant of peace upon the people of Earth and to finally await what heaven has for them. Godzilla illuminates in overwhelming light, as Godzilla shoots his heat ray one last time to the sky, letting off a final flash of light that blinds all the people of Earth.

Miguel, blinded and knocked out, wakes up to see himself in the clouds and dressed in white linen. He walks down the path and sees his family looking upon the edge of heaven. Miguel ran to his family, happy to see all of them making it. He even turns around to see his dead mother, father and relatives, to see themselves finally united in heaven. The film ends with Miguel looking up towards his side, and seeing a Sun that will forever shine on them and the people of Earth.

The film has a final screen card that quotes Numbers 6:24-26; "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace."

Directors and screenwriters of the film, Mel Gibson and Michael Dougherty

Mel Gibson had made a comeback in Hollywood with films such as Hacksaw Ridge and The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection. Wanting to make bigger films to spread what Christianity can be to general audiences, he began to tackle bigger IPs, which was something he hadn't done since the 90s with franchises such as Lethal Weapon. He came across Godzilla when he first met Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty during a Saturday mass. The two discussed how Godzilla could be linked towards Christianity, especially after King of the Monsters alluded these themes. Gibson and Dougherty approached Legendary Pictures about it in May 2025, and the film got the green light from the studio, after Gibson pointed out how his two biblically driven films were commercial successes.

Pre-production and writing[]

The two, as well as Dougherty's frequent collaborator Zach Shields, wrote the screenplay over the course of eight months, consulting Christian theologians on how to balance this film out. Eventually, the writing team got to the Book of Revelation, the apocalyptic book attributed to Apostle John. Both Gibson and Dougherty felt that this was a perfect book for a Godzilla film, mainly because of how the End Times usually correlates to a lot of destruction and retribution.

The Book of Revelation is so interesting; it was where I got the "mass awakening" idea for King Ghidorah when I did King of the Monsters. Well, not exactly, but the "apocalypse"-part of Revelation, yes. And to see it come full circle with this film, where Godzilla is now the harbinger of justice through the Great Retribution is just... you know? „

— Michael Dougherty at 2028 San Diego Comic-Con

Throughout the course of eight months, they've consulted with numerous scholars on how to make the movie seem like the book, whilst making deviations that would appeal to mainstream audiences, but would also not disrespect the source material. Gibson called it a "battle of wit" in which the writers' room grew from the initial three to a dozen screenwriters and theologians pointing out suggestions. Gibson, Dougherty and Shields did end making up several deviations from the actual Book, such as the way God carries out the Great Retribution on the Earth. The team faced some backlash for other contemporary scholars that say the film altering God's Word was "heresy" and should be condemned by Christians. Other people have argued that Gibson had done this before with great success with The Passion of the Christ. Despite the mixed reception, Gibson officially managed to get The Pope and the Catholic Church to back and endorse the film. Gibson did point out that the Book of Revelation was very vague and cryptic in its language, even amongst scholars, that it allowed the team to get away with a lot of alterations and tweaks.

Because of how vague the language and message of the Book was, I decided to add in some major alterations for mainstream audiences. Mike and I knew from the start that we just couldn't adapt it one-to-one; audiences wouldn't accept that. We made the ending more optimistic, we made it filled [with] more action, all that. And overall, I'm glad we chose a book that we could use flexibility with. „

— Mel Gibson at 2028 San Diego Comic-Con

The Satanic Dragon and The Beast referenced in Revelation were replaced with King Ghidorah and Destoroyah. While Legendary did buy the license, Destoroyah is never called by its official trademarked name, and is just called "The Beast." For King Ghidorah, his name was changed to "Satanic Ghidorah" and "Hell Ghidorah." Dougherty said that when writing the script in regards to the mark of the beast, the appearance of Destoroyah was what came to his mind first. Jared Krichevsky and Matt Allsopp led the design team for Destoroyah and Ghidorah, for their hellish reinventions. For Godzilla's design, Dougherty used the Godzilla design from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) with his belly more plump and muscular (similar to his design from King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong) and turning his spines from pink to blue.

For casting, the production had one general rule: the protagonists must be played by Christians. Matthew McConaughey was cast as Jesus on April 2026, which he was overjoyed to hear about. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe were cast as archangels in May, while Mark Wahlberg, Jim Caviezel, Nicole Kidman and Cailey Fleming were cast as the leading human family in June. That same month, Christian Bale was cast as Satan, with Gibson and Dougherty citing his 2019 Golden Globes acceptance speech on "thanking Satan." Wahlberg's character was initially called "Daniel Lincoln," but it was switched to "Miguel Johns," possibly as a reference to Christian influencer and philosopher Michael Jones of Inspiring Philosophy.

Filming[]

Filming started on July 3, 2026. The film was made on a budget of $230-250 million. Every day on set, Gibson, Dougherty and the cast, which included Bale who was irreligious, prayed every morning before they got on set. Gibson and Dougherty both took turns directing sequences; whilst Gibson did the more biblical scenes, which included scenes in the university, the church, the jail cell in hell, Dougherty took charge of action, especially in regards to Godzilla. However, Dougherty gives credit for Gibson for directing the climax fight, instead of himself.

Most of the film was shot in Jersey City, though Heaven and Hell being fully CG environments were shot at Warner Bros.'s Leavesden Studios. They called off shooting on Sundays to rest on that day and go to church services, which depended every Sunday; since the cast was predominantly Catholic, they usually attended Catholic mass services, although during June, they went with McConaughey and Fleming to a nearby Protestant church. Bale personally was disinterested in attending church, but was intrigued by the message of the gospel and the Bible. Filming concluded on November 4, 2026, which was McConaughey's 57th birthday.

Post-production[]

The film's visual effects were created by Moving Picture Company, Weta FX, Scanline VFX and DNEG, under the supervision of Charley Henley. The film contained roughly 2,750 VFX shots, the highest for a Godzilla film thus far. MPC did all of the action sequences in regards to Godzilla as well as most of the destruction sequences in the film, which included the Great Tribulation and the action sequences on Earth. Scanline created the earthquake destruction sequence, Weta FX created the sequences taking place in hell, including the climax, and the ending in heaven. DNEG worked on the opening in heaven, and also did the stereo conversion. MPC had stated that two of their computers crashed, due to the thousands of demons being rendered on screen.

The film's extensive visual effects work was deemed "ambitious" by Gibson, and even oversaw parts of the visual effects process out of sympathy for the artists. Because of the date in which principal photography ended and the deadline for the film to be locked in, the artists had more than two years to finish the film.

While Dougherty and Gibson co-directed the film together, the Directors Guild of America gave the sole directorial credit to Gibson; Dougherty instead received a "Produced by" credit by the end.

Music[]

Bear McCreary returned to do the music for Godzilla and the Second Coming. He knew the importance of Godzilla and his music, as well as how Christianity was important to lots of people. He took samples from his own score that he did for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and sampled pieces from The Passion of the Christ to provide basis for the film's music. He even created his own original music for the choir music that played in the church scene.

Marketing[]

Much like during production, the Catholic Church and The Pope endorsed the film as a way to "entertain the masses of our faith." In total, marketing costs ranged from $90-115 million. The film's first teaser trailer premiered at the 2028 San Diego Comic-Con, with Gibson, Dougherty, McConaughey, Wahlberg, Kidman, Fleming. Bale and producer Mary Parent attending the convention. The full trailer dropped on November 4, which was McConaughey's 59th birthday. The final trailer dropped on February 3, 2029.

Release[]

Theatrical[]

Godzilla and the Second Coming premiered in Vatican City on April 3, before being released worldwide on April 6, 2029, which was the week after Good Friday, in IMAX, 3D, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, 4DX, and ScreenX. The film was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures except for Japan, where the film was distributed by Toho Co. Ltd instead.

The film was banned in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia for religious reasons, particularly for depicting Jesus contrary to Islamic teachings and depicting him as an all-powerful God. This would be the highest-number of countries a Godzilla film would be banned from. The film was restricted in Malaysia, limited to certain theaters. China almost restricted the film as well, but the restrictions were eventually limited just before the movie released, in favor of a wide release.

Home media[]

The film released on Digital HD on July 7, 2029 and released on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD on July 30, 2029. The 4K release includes HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision high dynamic range, and a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

Legacy[]

Because of the release of this film and its connections to Godzilla, most of the Japanese population were inspired by its story and eventually got people to learn more about Christianity.
