Mothra x Kong: Dawn of Extinction is a 2030 American kaiju film produced, co-written and directed by Lisa Joy. A follow-up to 2028's Godzilla x Kong: Monster Apocalypse, it is the eighth film in the MonsterVerse, the 16th film in the King Kong franchise, and the fifth film in the Mothra franchise, the first since Rebirth of Mothra III in 1998. It stars Jason Statham, Ella Purnell, Thandiwe Newton, Kyle Chandler, Michelle Yeoh, Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle, Zhang Ziyi and John Tuturro. In the film, Mothra and Kong have to stop an evil Titan uprising caused by an ancient opponent from Mothra's past, whom is possessing the lead engineer of the new mech of Olympic Industries, Mechani-Kong.
After Godzilla x Kong: Monster Apocalypse sent Godzilla away for the time being, Legendary had to come up with a sequel, in the midst of Gareth Edwards's own Godzilla film and Toho planning a crossover with Paramount's Top Gun franchise. With the rising popularity of Mothra, Legendary decided to put her and Kong in the same film. The studio's producer Thomas Tull asked director Christopher Nolan to write up a story, similar to the fashion of Man of Steel. He did so, but passed off the story to his brother Jonathan, in which he and his wife, Lisa Joy, revamped the story into a screenplay. Joy was hired as director soon afterwards. Principal photography commenced from April 2029 to July 2029.
Mothra x Kong: Dawn of Extinction released to theaters on August 16, 2030. It received generally positive reviews, praised for its visual effects, action sequences and the score, but was criticized for its convoluted story. The film grossed $631.4 million against a budget of $170-210 million, becoming a box office success, as well as the MonsterVerse's second-highest grossing film at the time and the seventh-highest grossing film of 2030. The film was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Special Visual Effects and the Academy Award for Best Sound. A follow-up, titled Godzilla: Return of the King, was released to theaters on December 16, 2033.
