Tokyo (東京 Tōkyō) is the capital and most populous prefecture of Japan. It is also the most populous metropolitan area in the world, and is the second-largest metropolitan economy in the world after New York City, with a 2022 gross metropolitan product estimated at US$2.08 trillion (US$51,124 per capita). Naturally, it has appeared in numerous kaiju films, whether as a primary setting or merely in passing.
Located at the head of Tokyo Bay, Tokyo is part of the Kantō region on the central coast of Honshu, Japan's largest island. Tokyo serves as Japan's economic center and the seat of both the Japanese government and the Emperor of Japan. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government administers Tokyo's central 23 special wards (which formerly made up Tokyo City), various commuter towns and suburbs in its western area, and two outlying island chains known as the Tokyo Islands. Despite most of the world knowing Tokyo as a city, since 1943 its governing structure has been more akin to a prefecture, with an accompanying Governor and Assembly taking precedence over the smaller municipal governments which make up the metropolis.
Name[]
Tokyo was originally known as "Edo", meaning "estuary". Its name was changed to Tokyo (Tōkyō: tō (east) + kyō (capital)) when it became the de facto imperial capital in 1868.
History[]
Reiwa series (Meesmoth/TheMillionYearOldMan)[]
#JusticeForLove: End of the World[]

By early July 2020, it is now only a few days before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is scheduled to open on July 24, when a small asteroid fragment from Clara impacts Tokyo, destroying the Ginza area in a direct hit and leaving extreme devastation in the nearby special wards, including Minato, where the Tokyo Tower collapses after it was unable to withstand the asteroid's impact. Because of the incident, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was suddenly cancelled, while the United States government assures the destruction of Tokyo was only an isolated incident by still refusing to reveal Clara's existence.
Godzilla Plus Two[]

A giant Ankylosaurid had come ashore in search of an oil factory that he had smelled. Koichi, Hideki, Kenji, Noriko and Akiko all evacuate from the apartment building that they stayed in. The Ankylosaurid used its giant, clubbed tail to swing at infrastructure, destroying several blocks of Tokyo at once. The five spot a fishing boat on shore, with them thinking the sea would be safe. Suddenly, an array of giant dorsal plates emerge from the water, knocking the boat aside. As the five flee from the docks, Godzilla had emerged to challenge the dinosaur. The two clash and pounce on each other, destroying several blocks of Tokyo. A particular strong swing of the dinosaur's clubbed tail to the head enraged Godzilla, which he responded with a charge up of his energy in his dorsal plates. Koichi recalled what happened in Ginza in 1947, and the five hop into a basement cellar before Godzilla fires. Koichi, who was bracing for impact, hears that no pressure flow was happening above him. When he pops open the door, he realizes that the city was not razed; while a few city blocks were destroyed, there was no nuclear mushroom cloud in the sky. What lay in front of the Big G was the body of the dinosaur, lying on the ground. Godzilla presumed it to be dead, and walked off to the ocean. By the time the military managed to get fully mobilized, the monster had already left the city.
Top Gun: Godzilla S.O.S.[]
From where Shin Godzilla left off, Godzilla remained frozen in Tokyo. Once all of his radioactive matter decayed after the stated 20 days, predicted by Hiromi Ogashira, the JSDF plans to blow the monster up in a safe manner. Supervised by Rando Yaguchi, the JSDF sends three Mitsubishi F-2 jets, armed with highly explosive MOABs. Suddenly, Godzilla emerges from the statue, with longer, bulkier arms, and a slimmer lower body. When the jets dropped the explosives, Godzilla shrugged off the damage and retaliated back with a fire of a purple spiral ray of energy, which was unlike any of his previous abilities. After shooting one of the jets, Godzilla turned his tail towards the pair of F-2s, obliterating them with a ray of his own. As a show of dominance, Godzilla's back brightened to a bright purple, until he let out a shotgun barrage of lasers down onto Tokyo, bombarding the city like he did months prior. Yaguchi and Kayoco Anne Patterson watch in horror, as Godzilla roars in victory, and he swims back into the ocean.
Trivia[]
- Tokyo is the main setting of countless Japanese and non-Japanese films, ranging from kaiju films such as Godzilla to other kinds of films such as Sinking of Japan or The Last War.
- The destruction of Ginza in #JusticeForLove: End of the World by an asteroid impact later inspired a similar scene for the second season of Alice in Borderland, with the Shibuya ward being destroyed in a similar fashion.
