Varan (バラン, Baran) is a giant tri-phibian kaiju who first appeared in the 1958 Showa film, Varan and his first appearance alongside Godzilla is in the 1968 Showa Godzilla film, Destroy All Monsters. He is a major protagonist in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: Godzilla and is a member of Godzilla's Earth Defender faction.

In 1999, Varan is found living on the pony monitored Monsterland. When the White Changelings take control of the island and its inhabitants, Varan disappears as the White Changling invaders global assault is initiated. After the control is broken, Varan joins the other Earth monsters, Godzilla, Minilla, Anguirus, Mothra, Rodan, Kumonga, Gorosaurus, Manda, and Baragon, in the fight against King Ghidorah at Mount Everhoof, although he does not participate directly in the conflict itself. Once the space dragon is defeated, the spiked creature returns to Monsterland to live out his days with the rest of the Kaiju.
